Debate Chamber

Teacher Training

(posted by Adam)

Yesterday Debate Chamber conducted the first of two workshops for primary school teachers in Southwark, South London. Attendees were all planning to set up debating societies for their Gifted and Talented pupils in years 5 and 6. The inspiration for the session came from the work Debate Chamber has done for a number of years with secondary schools in the area, including the highly successful Southwark Debate League.

We discussed the best format for making debate accessible to younger students, and games and activities that help to build confidence in speaking, making arguments and listening to others. Teachers also shared ideas about issues in their schools and local communities that pupils might feel strongly about, and the challenges of discussing potentially sensitive subjects with this age group.
