Applied Maths Masterclass
This past Sunday, October 3rd at Birkbeck University in central London, a keen group of students participated in a day-long Masterclass on the topic of Applied Mathematics. Over the course of the day the students learnt about some of the ways in which mathematics can be used in the real world. In particular, students analysed population growth rates, thermodynamic problems, industrial mixing problems as well as the laws of motion. They used second order ordinary differential equations to analyse the motion of a pendulum, and confirmed their predictions to high accuracy with a simple experiment. By the end of the day the students had been exposed to many of the finer points of Applied Mathematics, and had gained a much deeper understanding both of what the subject entails and the possibility for using it in their future studies.
