Debate Chamber

Creative Writing Weekend

Autumn 2012 dates available soon University of London Union • Ages 15-18

Have you ever felt the burning desire to write, but just could not find the words? Or perhaps you write poems or stories already and would relish the chance to discuss your ideas?

The Debate Chamber Creative Writing Weekend offers the advanced tuition you need to develop your writing. This two-day event aims to improve technique, facilitate the sharing of ideas between young writers and inspire further creative endeavours. We will be looking at both prose fiction and poetry. During the course we will:

  • Analyse the artistic form of the novel, the short story, and poetry
  • Look at what classic writers, such as Hemingway and Forster, think about writing
  • Discuss the skills the writer, as an artist, must learn to develop
  • Learn practical exercises to take the strain out of writing
  • Workshop students’ writing pieces
  • Evaluate how writing from different points of view can achieve drastically different results
  • Develop an individual writing style and mood
  • Discuss how dialogue can construct meaning
  • Learn how to contract and extend time in your writing
  • Work at developing descriptive language and convincing characters
  • Examine narrative structure and plot – what makes a good opening? How do you maintain the reader’s interest?
  • Look at how poets use sound and imagery to structure meaning

Students are encouraged to bring their own work along, and everyone will compose and discuss several short pieces over the weekend.
