Debate Chamber

Debating

Debating is not just great fun, but an ideal way to explore controversial issues while developing invaluable reasoning and communication skills. During the debate workshops students will take part in a series of exercises and games designed to help improve their technique, before taking part in a full British Parliamentary debate on a topical issue. Our expert tutors, all former debate champions, will give students detailed personal feedback on how to improve their speaking.

What we will cover:

  • The rules of British Parliamentary debating: the most popular format in the UK at school and university level. You will learn the roles of different speakers and how to use ‘points of information’.
  • Making your case: What makes an opinion into an argument? How do moral and practical arguments work together? How can you best use evidence to support your claims? In this session you will practice building arguments and working cohesively to build a case as a team.
  • Rebuttal: Taking apart the opposing side’s case by exposing the factual, logical and moral shortcomings of their arguments. In this session you will learn how to take the fight to the enemy.
  • Style: How to look and sound more persuasive. Learn how tone, gestures, and choice of language can help you keep an audience on your side.

Debate Chamber tutors are experienced at working in a wide range of school environments. Activities last a full day, and are suitable for group sizes from a single class to a whole year group.
