Journalism Summer School

3rd – 5th August (WAITING LIST ONLY) and repeated on the 25th – 27th August 2010  (3 days) •  University of London Union • ages 15-18

An interactive thee-day course for anyone considering a career in journalism.

The Debate Chamber Journalism Summer school will give you a tour of the modern media and help build the practical skills you will need to get ahead, from how to craft a punchy sentence to getting your first commission.

WORKSHOPS:

  • TV-Camera-Operatorclipartgetting your message across: how to write effective headlines, news reports, editorials, blogs, television scripts and more
  • asking the right questions: learn how to conduct interviews and press conferences
  • make your own television news report
  • write and edit an edition of a daily national newspaper

SEMINARS AND DISCUSSIONS

  • paxmanpower, politics and the press: who owns the news? Was it ever really ‘The Sun wot won it’?
  • the media and the law: who can say what about whom? is free speech more important than national security or the right to privacy?
  • from telegrams to Twitter feeds: journalism and technology, past, present and future

TALKS AND Q+A

  • Journalistcareers talks by experienced broadcast and print journalists
  • tips from a freelance on how to get noticed
  • find out about uni courses, internships and more

Participants will also go on a tour of the BBC Television Centre, where they’ll have an opportunity to see BBC broadcasting in action and even get to use some of the equipment themselves.

The price of the Journalism Summer School is £195 per student for three days. Debate Chamber offers a limited number of full and partial bursaries to students who could not otherwise afford to attend.
