Law Masterclass
21st March, repeated on the 9th April 2010 • University of London Union • 10.30-16.30
Interested in law at university, but not sure what to expect?
The Law Masterclass is a great opportunity for students interested in law to explore three key areas of legal study together with our expert tutors. Throughout the day, Mini-lectures and small group seminars, together with work from statutes, cases and judgements will give you a realistic look at what law at university is all about.
Programme
Criminal Law
An introductory look at the principles and practice of Criminal Law to establish key concepts, students will turn their attention to the offences of murder and manslaughter, working through problem scenarios to establish the prosecution and defence cases, and interrogating how far the law reflects our moral convictions.
International Law
Students will explore issues involving human rights and the protection of human dignity. By examining the interactions between international laws and the laws of individual countries, students will gain an understanding of how these two areas of law work together. In the second part of this section the students will look at a War Crimes case study, examining a high-profile trial from recent years. We will have to look at issues involving fair procedures, the justice of capital punishment and balancing the place of victims and offenders in international trials.
Civil Law
We will begin by introducing the principal concepts of Contract Law: the formation of contracts, contractual terms, exclusion clauses, misrepresentation, breach of contract and remedies. Participants will then go on to examine these factors in a transactional context with a focus on consumer contracts and regulation. Students will examine the principles of Negligence: the standard and duty of care, breach, causation, liability and defences. The law relating to Defamation, Libel and Privacy will also be explored, followed by a case analysis exercise.
What previous students have said
Informative and engaging – it helped greatly to shed light on criminal law for a sixth former applying to study law.
I really enjoyed it. It’s a really good way of getting an insight into the world of law. I would definitely recommend it to others who are considering law at university or anyone for that matter who is interested in the subject.
I learnt a lot and enjoyed it – it made me realise that law is definitely what I want to do at university and after.
It was very informative and I think there’s a good relaxed atmosphere which makes it easy to take in the information and ask questions if necessary – the tutors managed to explain complex problems in a simple way.
