The Debate Chamber Medical Practice Masterclass will give students an introduction to some of the most important aspects of modern medicine and a few of the most common and troubling diseases which doctors have to deal with. Learning is through a combination of activities, group-work, discussion and instruction from tutors. Students will have the opportunity through case studies and role-play to see if they can make the right decisions under pressure!

The Medical Practice Masterclass is led by doctors and medicine graduates. It is ideal for those interested in how the science they learn in school is applied, and for anyone hoping to study Medicine or related disciplines at University.

Course Programme 2010:

Each workshop during the day will focus on a different area of medicine. In each case we will take the doctor’s point of view, exploring the science, technology and clinical knowledge that enable them to make life saving decisions.  The major areas we will cover are:

Haematology (Blood):

Students will acquire vital theoretical and practical knowledge of haematology through a series of problem solving exercises and group-work. In an emergency which blood do you give to people? How do blood groups affect paternity? Students will also be introduced to a range of less common blood disorders such as anemia, leukemia and lymphoma.

Cardiovascular (Heart):

Heart disease is one of the biggest killers in modern society – in medical practice the importance of knowing exactly how the heart works and what to do when it goes wrong is crucial. By learning about the cardiovascular system, and the diagnostic tools and techniques used by medical professionals in dealing with heart problems, students will be able to understand the heart in detail, and take part in some practical exercises based on listening to and identifying heart sounds.

Respiratory (Breathing):

Students will have the opportunity to learn about, and use their existing knowledge of, the respiratory system to discover the reality of lung diseases and the ways in which doctors try to tackle these difficult and unpleasant conditions. Students will learn about lung cancer, asthma, emphysemia and lung capacity – including a look at their own lung capacity and breathing rate.

Medical Imaging:

Medical imaging technology, such as X-Rays, ultra-sound and magnetics are crucial for doctors to diagnose a wide range of conditions. Students will gain an understanding of modern medical imaging technologies actually work, why they are important, what the risks are, and how they are applied in different situations.
