Debate Chamber

IR Summer School

IRSS

The International Relations Summer School is a three-day course taking you deep into the great debates of modern global politics.

  • Can the United States continue to be the world’s policeman, and should it?
  • What keeps some countries poor while others prosper?
  • Does the spread of democracy promote peace?
  • What lies at the roots of ethnic violence?

With tutors whose backgrounds include International Relations, War Studies and International Development, the course provides a thorough introduction to a host of fascinating topics comprising the dominant controversies in modern International Relations studies.

Students will take part in debates on whether the West should promote democracy abroad and how; compare Realism, Liberalism, Constructivism and Marxism as tools for understanding global power; discuss world systems theory and the politics of underdevelopment, and use case studies – from the Lebanon war to the invasion of Sierra Leone – to test competing theories and further develop their ideas.

A full schedule is available to download. Further information about tutors is available here. A poster which you can display or distribute in your school is available here.

University of London Union • 18th-20th August (3 days) WAITING LIST ONLY • Open to students aged 15-18
