Politics Summer School
So they bungled the economy, lied about the war, and got caught with their hands in the till. Politicians’ reputations may never have been lower, but that makes it all the more important for informed citizens to understand how ‘the system’ works. Whether you intend to study politics, hope to climb the greasy pole yourself, or just want to know who is in charge, how they got there and what they are up to, Debate Chamber’s Politics Summer School offers a thorough introduction to the theory and practice of modern politics.
During this three day course students will debate questions from can a government consistently pursue both equality and liberty? to what is democracy, and do we live in one? and evaluate the arguments of major theorists. We will investigate where the balance of power lies in the British state, probe the inner workings of the party system, and explore the changing face of political campaigning by studying some of the hardest-fought and dirtiest campaigns in recent memory. We will learn about the legislative process and take a tour of the Houses of Parliament. Finally, students will take part in a Mock Parliamentary Session as MPs, whips or ministers, with the chance to draft bills, debate, vote on legislation, and even conduct a session of Prime Minister’s Questions.
