Debate Chamber

Politics Weekend

Government. It is a dirty job, but somebody has to do it. If you think one day that somebody might be you, Debate Chamber’s Politics Weekend offers a head start in the knowledge and skills you will need to get ahead. The course, open to all students in years 10-13, includes extensive discussions, lectures and debates on the British political system and an action-packed Mock Parliament.

  • Know the System – briefings on the constitution, electoral system and parliamentary process; discussion of current controversies and opportunities for reform.
  • The Path to Power - take a  critical look at past election campaigns and consider party strategies of your own.
  • Mock Parliament – taking the roles of the whips, speaker and party leaders,  you will propose, discuss, and pass new laws, respond to international crises and engage in parliamentary debates and Prime Ministers Questions.

By the end of the course you will have gained important skills in public speaking, teamwork, leadership and, of course, dirty tricks. You will operate at ease both within and without the party system. You will have a greater understanding of the formal political process and the inner workings of parliament, as well as debates surrounding political reform. The event  will suit anyone looking to study politics or practice the second oldest profession themselves.

A detailed schedule is available for download here.

The Politics Weekend will take place at the University of London Union on 16th-17th October and repeated 4th-5th December 2010. The event is open to students aged 15-18.
