Debate Workshops
Debate Chamber can come into your school and run
a half-day or full-day debate workshop for groups of 8-32 students.
Whatever their age or level of experience, we have the materials
to challenge and excite them. After a workshop packed with games,
exercises, tutorials and debates, your students will receive a Young
Debater Award for their efforts.
Introduction to Journalism
Identifying stories, handling bias and writing
news are the focus in the morning. Students then put their design,
writing and editorial skills into practice with our "Make The
News" newspaper simulation game. A popular course which develops
skills for English and Citizenship and is suitable for all ages.
Introduction to Law
Students gain an insight into the importance of
the legal system and the workings of a court. The day ends with
a mock trial in full wig and gown, working in teams and guided by
a professional barrister. The Law course is fast-paced and fun -
it was Debate Chamber's most requested course in 2005-06.
Economics Day
Whether your students are studying economics or
considering the subject, "Chancellor for a Day" is an
exciting simulation exercise which gets them making decisions and
dealing with the consequences on inflation, growth, unemployment
and public opinion. Students get conflicting guidance from Debate
Chamber "advisers" and work in teams to steer their economy
through a series of events. Ideal for Economics and Citizenship.
European Politics
Our top-rated summer school exercise was the "Your
Europe" game and we can now offer it to schools. Students represent
a country at a European Council meeting. Their job is to negotiate,
debate and vote to secure a set of objectives. Compromises will
have to be made and deals done. Debate Chamber "advisers"
are on hand with briefing papers and advice on the issues. The day
ends with a press conference where each head of government justifies
their performance to their public. Ideal for Politics, Citizenship
and History.
Interview Skills Training
Debate Chamber offers a range of challenging interview
skills training, including courses especially for Oxbridge applicants.
Our courses are fast-paced, practical and up-to-date, with trainers
including experienced interviewers and current first-year undergraduate
students.
Mock Election
Ideal for Citizenship and Government & Politics,
our half-day and full-day mock election is a great way to develop
understanding of the political process. It is designed to illustrate
the trade-offs between ideology and popularity which shape democratic
systems. Now updated for the 2007 local elections.
Politics
We have specially-designed sessions to help students
develop understanding of: Political Philosophy, Electoral Systems,
Theories of Government, as well as running "big idea"
sessions on Liberty, Democracy and Equality.
Philosophy
Sessions include Ethics, Metaphysics, Epistemology,
Philosophy of Religion, Philosophy of Science and Philosophy of
Art. Workshops use an interactive and hands-on approach allowing
students to tackle major philosophical problems from their own perspective.
Science
New for 2006-07, our science workshops are a response
to changes in the Science curriculum, helping students to explore
all sides of current scientific issues to assess arguments and apply
their scientific knowledge to the world of political action.
