Young Lawyers Summer School
4th – 6th August and repeated 28th – 30th August 2012 • University of London Union • Ages 11-14
This summer we are holding an extended three-day course for young lawyers, with a new and exciting case for the Mock Trial, and new sessions on civil law, negotiation and the human rights.
Over the course of these three days the students will receive and introduction to what law is, how laws are made, how courts and the justice system work as well as cover a variety of different areas within the law. They will also participate in a full Mock Crown Court Trial at the end of the course complete with real barristers wigs and gowns. We will cover different types of legal careers, explaining the differences between barristers and solicitors as well as the roles of judges and juries. The overall tenor of the course is to combine a mixture of interactive activities with a learning experience based on exposure to a wide variety of new information.
An important goal of this course is to establish a skill set for the students who participate. The Mock Trial element of the event, for example, teaches students vital skills of analysis, teamwork, public speaking and confidence. These are abilities which will benefit students across a wide variety of subjects at school.
This course will give students the opportunity to engage in an extremely lively, interactive and enjoyable learning environment with peers who have an interest in law or who are keen to learn about it. The tutors are friendly and experienced and ensure everyone is able to participate in the activities. The more students choose to engage with the material, the other students and the activities, the more they will get out of the Young Lawyers event.
